Originally known in historical texts as Al Hajarain (meaning "The Two Mountains" in Arabic), Hatta is an ancient wadi settlement nestled 300 meters above sea level in the rugged Hajar Mountain range. Archaeological findings confirm that human civilizations have inhabited this fertile mountain basin for over 3,000 years, dating back to the Bronze Age (Umm Al Nar period) and Iron Age.

Strategically positioned between the Arabian Gulf coast and the Gulf of Oman, Hatta was an indispensable freshwater resting post on the ancient copper and frankincense caravan trade routes. Mountain springs and shaded acacia groves offered weary desert traders and their camels vital respite before navigating treacherous mountain passes.

The Falaj Irrigation Engineering: To conquer the arid mountain climate, Hatta's indigenous farmers engineered the Al Falaj system — subterranean, gravity-fed stone aqueducts channeling water directly from mountain aquifers to terraced date palm plantations, wheat fields, and pomegranate orchards. This ancient system remains functional to this day at Hatta Heritage Village.

1850s Accession & Al Hosn Fortress:

During the reign of the Bani Yas and Al Maktoum dynasty in the 1850s, Hatta became a sovereign enclave of Dubai when the Sultan of Oman ceded the territory to Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum.
